STONEY ACRE PUPPIES Cavapoo Summary:
|
What Cavapoo generations do you breed?
We breed 2 generations of Cavapoos "F1" and "F1b"
F1 means first generation, 50% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel & 50% Poodle
F1b - The "b" stands for backcross, so, an F1 (first generation breed) with a backcross to one of the full breeds - in our case we backcross to a father poodle for hypoallergenic tendencies - meaning an F1 Cavapoo mom to our Poodle Dad.
The F1 & F1B crosses ensures hybrid vigor, excellent temperament, and intelligence.
I often receive inquiries about the distinctions between F1 Cavapoos and F1b Cavapoos in my breeding program. Regarding my breeding philosophy, the disparity between the two is relatively minimal.
Allergies/Shedding:
When contemplating the choice between an F1 and F1b for a potential puppy owner, the primary consideration boils down to the severity of allergies. F1 Cavapoos generally prove suitable for individuals with mild allergies, while those with more pronounced allergies might find an F1b to be a preferable option. It's important to note that both generations exhibit very low shedding, although complete non-shedding is not possible as even humans shed.
Traits:
In terms of physical and temperamental traits, I purposefully breed all my Cavapoos to possess specific characteristics. Both F1 and F1b variants showcase furnishings (a poofy teddy bear face), wavy coats (with slight variations in wave tightness), and an average size ranging from 12 to 18 pounds. Contrary to a common misconception, F1b Cavapoos do not necessarily mean they all resemble poodles more in terms of nose, eye, ear shape, and curl tightness.
Temperament:
Known for being easily trainable and exceptionally tolerant, both F1 and F1b Cavapoos prove to be excellent companions for families with children. Their manageable size makes them easy to handle and suitable for travel. These "velcro" dogs exhibit a sweet demeanor, preferring to stay close to their owners. With flexible exercise needs, they are content with one daily walk but can also become quite athletic if engaged in regular hikes or runs. Intelligent and possessing cheerful personalities, they thrive on companionship and are not well-suited for those wanting to leave a dog alone for extended periods.
What are Cavapoos best known for?
Cavapoos are well-known for their kind, affectionate, sensitive, and placid temperament that makes them perfect in a variety of family settings but also very suitable for therapy. They are devoted, curious, loving, and sociable. They will be very happy in almost any home environment, providing their food, exercise and attention needs are met. One of the things to bear in mind when deciding whether to get this breed is that they can become really attached to their family. This means that they can display separation anxiety when they are left on their own. Hence, its important to do some strategic planning during the early training stages to teach your dog its okay to be home alone for spurts of time.
If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining pooch who loves cuddles and is loyal to his family, this might just be the dog for you!
Do Cavapoo's bark a lot?
Cavapoos are not known to be barkers. That said, every dog is an individual, so some may be more vocal than others. In our expereince, when an unfamiliar vehicle pulls in they may signal to let us know, or a knock on the door when everyone is together already may spark their interest - but they are quick to listen to commands and refocus. How much a dog barks may also be dependent upon how much they have been socialized.
What are some expected costs of owning a Cavapoo?
When considering the lifetime cost of owning your new dog, remember to take into account the following costs:
Are Cavapoo's suitable for first time dog owners?
Cavapoos are a really good choice for first time owners because of their adaptability and friendliness. They love to experience new things and generally pick up training quite quickly. If you aren’t going to be at home for long periods of time, your dog might struggle with separation anxiety, so this is something to consider if you’re away from home for long periods of the day.
What if im not home all day everyday?
Being a very companion based breed they do well with their family being around more often then not. If you are someone that loves to be around home but are commited to a workday schedule where people are out during day time hours, make sure to consider ability to work from home or take a holiday to start, and then arranging times to come home during the day afterwards. If you dont have the ability to come home after the initial time home be sure to find a reputable dog walker or doggy daycare in your area premptive to puppy inquiry.
Do Cavapoos enjoy the outdoors?
They love to be outside for playtime. They prefer to be wherever you are and will make better pets when they're included in all family activities. If temperatures aren't extreme they are happy to be out in the winter/summer for extended periods of time. The benefit of having an intelligent dog, they will let you know when its time to be picked up or head inside.
Personally, we take our dogs everywhere with us. They are quick to jump in the side by side to head down the trails or in the car to make a trip to town or head to the cottage! We also spend an great deal of time with our dogs outside adventuring whether its for 15 minutes or half of the day they are alongside us keeping up with whatever activity we are engaging in.
Can Cavapoos live in Apartments or Condos?
Cavapoos can make an ideal apartment/condo dogs. They are tidy pups that don't take up much room or require a big yard, plus they are pretty quiet. A couple considerations however, this breed does well with about an hour of intentional excercise per day, for instance 2 x 30 min walks. In the early days of training potty training requires frequent trips outside, it is very helpful to have a potty area on a balcony. Taking time also to make sure the balcony is secure, meaning there is no large spaces in the railing or furniture pushed against the rail. If your rail isn't fully secure you can purchase a pet fence to create a safe area on your balcony, and make sure puppy is supervised when taking a potty break there.
Are there some overall expectations I should have in regards to training a Cavapoo?
Cavapoos are intelligent, eager to please dogs who respond well to training and learning new things. Our puppies specifically have been exposed to 2+ weeks of outdoor pottying. Potty traiing can be one of the most difficult things to accomplish going home, so we make sure puppies have ample time to get some good skills underneath them so that potty training becomes more about routine in their new home versus a completely new concept. With routine in place and a bit of patience they will pick it up fairly quickly.
They're also a social breed and enjoy human interaction and playing with other dogs. They benefit from socializing from an early age, puppy socialization classes are also a great addition for this breed.
As is the case with all breeds, they will start to approach new experiences with caution when they're around 12 weeks old.
Therefore, it’s really important for their development that they experience as many different situations as possible. On our "Need to Know" page we references some great materials to support families under Relationship Expectations.
While they are still so young and receptive, it's a good idea to introduce your Cavapoo puppies to other dogs, people and livestock as well as car travel and unfamiliar noises, such as traffic.
Affectionate dogs who love cuddling and human interaction, Cavapoos can be prone to developing separation anxiety.
It’s good practice to leave them on their own for small periods during training so they can get used to being by themselves.
What is the best Cavapoo haircut?
Teddy Bear Clip. This is by far the most popular cut for a Cavapoo, probably because it makes them look like the cutest little teddy bear around. To achieve this look, the fur on the body and legs is kept fairly short and the face is trimmed into a rounded shape with scissors. Make sure to tell your groomer you want this type of cut!
